Former finance minister Ingrida Šimonytė rumored to join Lithuania's central bank board

With the term of office of the deputy chairman of the Bank of Lithuania’s board and two of its members coming to an end this year, Vitas Vasiliauskas, the chairman of the central bank’s board, may propose to appoint Ingrida Šimonytė, former finance minister, to the central bank’s management body, the Lietuvos Žinios daily reports citing unofficial sources.

However, Šimonytė, who currently teaches macroeconomics at Vilnius University, would not make any comments.

“I have heard too much of various rumors in my life... I simply have nothing to say about it. I am doing what I am doing and plan to keep on doing that,” Šimonytė told the daily.

Audrius Misevičius, who has served on the board of the central bank since 2004, will step down on Thursday.

The term of office of Vaidievutis Geralavičius, who has been sitting on the board for more than eight years, will expire on May 3. Darius Petrauskas, deputy chairman of the central bank’s board, will see his term of office expire on December 3.

Šimonytė worked as finance minister from 2009 until the end of 2012.
