Lithuania's DNB Bankas ordered to pay competition fine

DNB Bankas, Lithuania's third-biggest commercial bank by assets, will have to make an outright payment of 8.63 million litas (EUR 2.5m) fine, imposed on it by the Lithuanian Competition Council, the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania has ruled.

The court turned down the bank's request to temporarily suspend the payment of the fine and upheld the decision made by Vilnius Regional Administrative Court in January. The decision of the Supreme Administrative Court, which was passed on February 20, is not open to challenge.

DNB Bankas failed to prove to the court that it could suffer "substantial and irreparable financial damage" due to the payment of the contested fine, the court said.

Vilnius Regional Administrative Court, which earlier turned down the bank's request to temporarily suspend the payment of the fine, will now hear the dispute on the merits.

The Competition Council last December slapped fines totaling 57 million litas on the country's three largest banks - SEB Bankas, Swedbank and DNB Bankas - and the security firm G4S Lietuva for restricting competition in the cash-in-transit and cash handling services markets.

The three banks and the security firm contested the fines. Courts have rejected requests from all three banks to temporarily suspend the payment of the fines.
