Lithuanian environment minister expects shale gas contract with Chevron in mid-September

Lithuanian Environment Minister Valentinas Mazuronis expects that the US energy company Chevron will be named the winner of a tender to explore for unconventional hydrocarbons in the western part of the country in mid-September and will receive a shale exploration license, the business daily Verslo Žinios reports.

Mazuronis told the paper that the government had instructed the Environment Ministry to adopt four pieces of legislation setting out the procedures for shale exploration work in compliance with the recently-amended Underground Law.

"I do not think that these written procedures will deter Chevron from its plans to explore our underground resources. I expect that they will be issued with a license and carry out the exploration work," he said.

Juozas Mockevičius, the outgoing director of the country's Geological Service, told the media earlier this week that he saw several reasons why Chevron could abandon its shale exploration and production project in Lithuania.
