The ministry has until July 15 to carry out an analysis of the efficiency of the State Tax Inspectorate's tax administration and to put forward proposals on how to improve tax administration, according to the Prime Minister's press service.

"The collection of some taxes causes concern. Therefore, I want to know the reasons behind this shortfall in the revenue collection. Once we have the analysis, we will be able to draw specific conclusions and make next steps," Butkevičius said in a press release.

According to figures released by the Finance Ministry, Lithuania's national budget revenues for the first five months of this year were 77.4 million litas (EUR 22.4m) lower than projected and the central government's revenues fell 169.4 million litas short of the target.

The national budget includes both the central government and local governments.

Revenues from the value-added tax (VAT) and excise duties were below projections.

The VAT, the largest single source of budget revenues, brought 3.688 billion litas into the state's coffers, 350.4 million litas, or 8.7 percent, less than planned. Excise tax revenues came in 100.8 million litas, or 7.4 percent, below the target, at 1.266 billion litas.
