"There are plans to issue a guarantee of this size to make it easier for the company to borrow. The Finance Ministry does not object to that," Evelina Butkutė-Lazdauskienė, the prime minister's spokeswoman, told BNS.
It was said earlier that the Finance Ministry would issue a 200-million-litas guarantee to banks.
A tender announced by Klaipėdos Nafta to secure a loan of 252 million litas and a guarantee of 133 million litas for the LNG terminal project fell through earlier this year due to the break-up of a banking consortium.
According to unofficial information available to BNS, the consortium of three banks - SEB Bankas, Nordea Lietuva, and Swedbank - broke up following the last-minute withdrawal by Swedbank.
Nordea Bank Finland has already loaned Klaipėdos Nafta 120 million litas under an overdraft facility agreement signed in early February.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) is also considering providing financing for the project. The bank is currently assessing an application from the company for a 73-million-euro loan.
Lithuania expects to build the terminal in Klaipėda by the end of 2014 to obtain a cheaper alternative to Gazprom-supplied Russian gas.
