Netherlands’ Van Oord dredging Klaipėda port channel for LNG terminal

The Dutch company Van Oord early in February started dredging Klaipėda port’s channel at the so-called Kiaulės Nugara (Pig’s Back) island, the site of Lithuania’s planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.

The company launched dredging works on February 8, the Vakarų Ekspresas daily reported on Thursday. The Dutch company will deepen a certain area of the port’s waters to 14.5 percent, and to 16 meters at the Pig’s Back so as to adapt the site for the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).

The area under dredging will exceed 2,000 square meters. The works shall be carried out within a period of 135 calendar days, and the project is worth 72 million litas (EUR 20.7m, not including VAT).

Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors BV is currently also dredging the port's shipping channel. Between 90 and 100 workers of the Dutch company are working in the Lithuanian port now.

Lithuania expects to build the LNG terminal in Klaipėda by the end of 2014 to obtain a cheaper alternative to Gazprom-supplied Russian gas.
