After taking into account the proposals and remarks made as part of the tender launched in late December, the tender conditions are currently being renewed and the procurement requirements are being clarified according to the suppliers’ questions and proposals. It is planned for the renewed documents to be shared with all potential suppliers by way of market consultation and following analysis of received remarks, a new tender will be launched. The tender is planned to begin in late March or early April.
“The new railway bridge over the river Neris near Jonava will be one of the greatest challenges and most technically complex engineering buildings in the construction of the Rail Baltica railway. It will be not only Lithuania’s but also the Baltic States’ longest railway bridge, it will not have any supports in the water, and so the contractor will have to employ the newest technologies. In order to ensure that the procurement conditions for such a complex object is absolutely clear to all suppliers, it was decided to adjust the tender purchase document (technical project, work quantity worksheet, contractual conditions and technical specifications) directives,” says LTG Infra CEO Karolis Sankovski.

According to K. Sankovski, this tender, like all other ongoing Rail Baltica project works as well as upcoming tenders, could become an important ‘cushion’ for the Lithuanian economy. According to the contract, the winning contractor will have to not only construct the bridge but also perform landscaping, install noise suppressing barriers, reconstruct the nearby water supply as well as other engineering networks, and reconstruct drainage installations.
In total, the new bridge will span 1,510 metres. Currently, the longest bridge in Lithuania is the Lyduvėnai railway bridge spanning the river Dubysa at a total of 599 metres in length, while the longest road traffic bridge is built near Jurbarkas over river Nemunas, spanning 494 metres. The longest span on the new bridge between supports where it crosses the river will reach 150 metres.
The new bridge in Lithuania will be a part of a wholly new stretch of the 1435mm width gauge railway Rail Baltica spanning between Kaunas and the Lithuanian-Latvian border.
Rail Baltica is the largest railway infrastructure project in the Baltic States’ history, during whose implementation an electrified European gauge two-way railway line will be laid down from Warsaw through Kaunas to Riga and Tallinn. The combined length of the Rail Baltica railway line in the Baltic States is to reach 870km, with 392km in Lithuania, 265km in Latvia and 213km in Estonia.
The project’s construction works are expected to be valued at 5.8 billion euros, which is the largest investment aimed at improving mobility and travel opportunities, and developing business, tourism and trade in the region.
