In her decree to the Seimas, the head of state notes that Urbanavičius has a lot of experience in the sphere of law enforcement as he worked almost six years at Vilnius City Chief Police Commissariat and over ten years at the Customs Criminal Service.
"Under Urbanavičius' management, the Customs Criminal Service organized complex international investigations which led to the identification of criminal schemes, large-scale arrests and protection of Lithuania's economic interests," the president was quoted in the statement.
Urbanavičius also led the first investigations into illegal enrichment and was also in charge of investigations against two largest criminal smuggling groups in Lithuania's history.
Urbanavičius, 40, started working at the Special Investigation Service a year ago. He is currently first deputy director of the SIS.
Pursuant to the existing law, the president nominates a candidate to SIS director and, upon the Seimas approval, appoints and dismisses him/her.
SIS director is appointed for a term of five years. The SIS's former director Žimantas Pacevičius was dismissed by the president after the Seimas approval last October.
