2014-2020 EU budget remains key presidency issue, Irish and Lithuanian diplomats say

The negotiations with the European Parliament on the 2014-2020 budget remains the key issue on the EU presidency agenda, Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says.

Achievements of the Irish EU presidency and goals of the upcoming Lithuanian EU presidency as of July 1 were discussed by Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Vytautas Leškevičius and Irish Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton In Dublin on Friday.

Leškevičius underlined at the meeting that the Irish and Lithuanian presidencies have similar priorities which include financial stability, promoting growth and job creation as well as the EU expansion and neighborhood, the ministry said in a statement.

The diplomats also agreed to seek adoption of all necessary legal acts for the EU multiannual budget to come into force at the start of the next year.

Other issues on the agenda included strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union and creating an EU banking union. The Lithuanian vice-minister positively evaluated Ireland's accomplishments in strengthening the EU's single market, and presented actions planned by the Lithuanian EU presidency in the area.

Leškevičius noted Lithuania's wish to put more effort on the creation of digital market and also stressed the importance of completing the EU's internal energy market.

The vice-minister confirmed Lithuania's readiness to work smoothly and effectively, and thanked Ireland for sharing its valuable experience and smooth cooperation of the Trio Presidency.
