"The EU economy is recovering, therefore, close cooperation among all EU institutions and members is becoming especially important. During its presidency, Lithuania, as a fair mediator, will seek to ensure that all EU agreements on financial stability, economic growth, and job creation are implemented in time and would also strengthen the EU as an example of global openness and security," Butkevičius said ahead of the visit.
During the traditional visit of the government from the country taking over the EU Presidency to Brussels, members of the Government of Lithuania and the European Commission would discuss the economic and financial situation in the EU, economic growth measures, the Eastern Partnership and the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. These are among key tasks the Lithuanian EU Presidency will focus on as of July 1.
The Government of Lithuania notes that it will have to deal with an agenda more intense than usual, since the EU is working out legislation related to the multiannual EU budget for 2014-2020.
During a bilateral meeting with President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, the Lithuanian prime minister will also discuss other important EU issues, including the euro and energy. Members of the Lithuanian Cabinet are also scheduled to meet with Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.
Lithuania will take over the EU Presidency on July 1.
