Ireland is due to assume EU presidency on 1 January, replacing Cyprus.

"Lithuania supports Ireland's ambitious presidency objectives, particularly the ones in connection to the key points on the EU agenda – completion of the long-term financial perspective, development of digital agenda and common energy market, further deepening of EU common internal market and solution to economic and financial policy issues," Linkevičius said in a press release.

Lithuania will take over EU presidency from Ireland on 1 July.

"Lithuania and Ireland already have experience of successful joint efforts. We particularly appreciate your support to Lithuania's preparations to hold presidency of the European Council," said the Lithuanian diplomacy chief.
