Lithuanian President believes agreement with EP on EU budget should be reached under Irish presidency

An agreement with the European Parliament (EP) on the community's multi-annual budget should be reached during the Irish presidency over the European Union (EU) Council, says Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė.

She spoke after meeting with EP European People's Party Group Chairman Joseph Daul and his deputies Marian-Jean Marinescu and Jozsef Szajer in Vilnius on Wednesday.

"Merely six months are left until 2014. The sooner we agree and have all the legal acts necessary for implementation of budgetary financial programs in place, the sooner EU member-states will be able to start using the EU funds," the Lithuanian president said.

The EU's multi-annual budget is approved by the European Council before it is submitted to the European Parliament.

Following lengthy talks, leaders of EU member states agreed in February on a slashed 960-billion-euro budget for the 2014-2020 period. Speaking against budget cuts, the EP demands envisaging a possibility of reviewing the budget during the 2014-2020 financial perspective.

For the future financial framework, Lithuania managed to secure 4 billion litas more (EUR 1.16 b) than it had in the 2007-2013 period. The total package of the EU's financial assistance to Lithuania grew by nearly 10 percent and should amount to 44.5 billion litas.
