Lithuanian president's adviser: Russia has taken serious actions against Eastern Partnership countries

Russia has taken serious actions to prevent Eastern Partnership countries from getting closer to the European Union, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė's adviser on foreign policy issues, Laurynas Jonavičius, says.

"There's such a risk," he told Žinių Radijas (News Radio) on Tuesday when asked whether Russia's actions might affect the Eastern Partnership program.

"It is obvious for everyone who is observing the situation in the Eastern Partnership space that Russia is making serious steps to stop the European integration process of those countries. A recent example is when Armenia was in essence forced to renounce its European integration and the country started talking about Customs Union membership. Once again, such decisions were made with active help of Russia," the presidential adviser said.

In his words, Armenia "had no freedom of manoeuvre" after Russia raised gas prices for the country.

"We also see other actions, against Ukraine, Moldova, "wine wars", "chocolate wars", any other wars. We see that Russia is working very actively ignoring its international commitments, trying to keep Eastern Partnership countries away from the EU," Jonavičius said.

In response to Russia's actions, the European Parliament has recently adopted a resolution calling on Russia not to undermine the European integration of Eastern Partnership countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, which is one of the priorities of the incumbent Lithuanian EU presidency.
