37 new HIV cases diagnosed in Lithuania this year

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has already been diagnosed to 37 people in Lithuania this year, 12 women and 25 men, according to the Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS.

14 of them got infected through shared needles, 15 via sexual intercourse. The manner of infection of eight more individuals is yet to be established.

Among the new HIV cases, 11 were reported in custody institutions and one in prison. Another 10 cases were established in in-patient health care institutions, including half of the cases in advanced stages of AIDS.

According to data published by the Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS, the HIV infection tendencies remain similar to those of earlier years.

All in all, 2,097 HIV cases have been reported in Lithuania by April 1, 2013, 1,712 men and 385 women.
