Panevėžys Regional Court rejected an appeal by Mindaugas Balčiūnas, secretary general of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation suspected of bribery and jobbery, against his suspension as the federation's secretary general.

"The January 18 ruling by Panevėžys District Court stands. The court noted that criminal acts Balčiūnas is suspected of are related to his position as the federation's secretary general and his powers. The court believes his reinstatement might create conditions for Balčiūnas influencing witnesses or other suspects and this way obstructing the investigation," Jolita Gudelienė, spokeswoman for the court, told BNS.

Panevėžys Regional Court's ruling is final and binding.

Panevėžys prosecutors, in cooperation with officers of the Special Investigation Service, are carrying out an investigation into jobbery, fraud, and document forgery as part of the probe into legitimacy of spending municipal money for reconstruction of Romantic Hotel.

The hotel was used to accomodate basketball players during 2011 Eurobasket championship and was reconstructed for that purpose. Prosecutors are now investigating if using public money to reconstruct the private hotel was in keeping with the law.
