Environmental investigation opened after dozen dead seals washed ashore in Lithuania

12 dead seals have been found on the beach along the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda, with three washed ashore over the course of this week only, Arūnas Gruzas of the Lithuanian Sea Museum tells the Lietuvos Rytas daily.

"The questions is why young, strong, well-fed animals die, why they are washed ashore exactly in this location. If seals in the Baltic sea had some infectious disease, their dead bodies should have washed up in other locations as well. The seals could have died entangled in fishing nets, but fishermen deny their involvement," Gruzas said.

Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis ordered an investigation by environmental institutions after six dead seals were washed ashore over the last few days to identify the cause of death and those responsible for that.

Specialists say the seals most probably drowned after becoming entangled in fishing nets. There's a possibility that later fishermen just threw their bodies into the sea.
