The proposal was adopted during the EP session earlier this week. However, the merger process should not start shortly, Lithuanian MEP Leonidas Donskis told BNS.
"The ballot is of advisory character and I think actions in connection to the merger of the institutions will not start immediately. However things are, it was a certain minor failure on our part, as we wanted the parliament's position to be in support of keeping the institute," Donskis said.
In his words, some Lithuanian MEPs attempted consolidating the efforts, however, most of the EP voted otherwise. Donskis said the merger efforts are aimed at reducing overlapping functions and added costs.
Established in 2010, the European Institute for Gender Equality aims to fight gender discrimination in the EU and raise public awareness on gender matters.

The European Parliament (EP) has suggested merging the Vilnius-based European Institute for Gender Equality with the agency of fundamental freedoms in Vienna.
