Experts believe that former HU-LCD leader Landsbergis' decision to run for the position of the party's chairman was determined not by his wish to lead the party but rather to attract attention to problems he sees.
„Landsbergis and Kubilius are politicians of a different type and rather complement ach other than compete with each other. Direct competition between them would create a rather complicated situation for party members,“ Ramunas Vilpisauskas, director of the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University, told BNS.
Tomas Janeliunas, a lecturer at the institute, believes Landsbergis „perhaps lacks attention to his advice in the party“ and „is not always happy about the way the party responds to his remarks.“
„It seems to me that in fact he wants not so much to lead the party again but rather to show once again that he is teaching the party to some purpose and is trying to get some theses across,“ Janeliunas told BNS.
Landsbergis, 80, confirmed on Monday his decision to run for the position of chairman of the HU-LCD.
The party's convention is scheduled in late April or early May, and chairman is expected to be elected by then.
