Gediminas Kirkilas: hopes for Association Agreement with Ukraine during EU Lithuanian Presidency

There are more hopes that the European Union and Ukraine will sign an Association Agreement during the Lithuanian EU Presidency in the second half of this year, Gediminas Kirkilas, chairman of the parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs, said on Wednesday.

„The fact that Ukraine has taken important steps at the very highest level to sign an Association Agreement with the EU is a very good sign showing that Ukraine is taking seriously its prospect of becoming an EU member state,“ Kirkilas said after a meeting with Ukrainian Ambassador to Lithuania Valeriy Zhovtenko.

There are hopes that the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement will be signed during the forthcoming EU Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius on Nov. 28-29. Concerned about opposition persecution, EU officials have warned Ukraine to show progress in organizing elections and prevent „selective justice.“
