The Ministry of National Defense said in a statement the integrated maritime surveillance system of the Baltic sea area and the Curonian Lagoon will step up exchange of information on potential border violations, pollution, smuggling, illegal fishing and in cases of search and rescue.
Individual maritime surveillance measures of the army, Border Guard Service, and Klaipėda Sea Port were integrated during the project.
"I am glad this project has been implemented so fast. The decision by the Prime Minister's Office was made in 2010, and two years later, we have a system that can be used by all institutions involved," Minister of National Defense Rasa Juknevičienė said in a statement.
In her words, the integrated system would help avoid overlapping of certain functions and reduce budget expenditure.
