Italian-style protest at Lithuanian border checkpoints doesn't result in long queues

Some 24 hours after the start of the so-called Italian-style protest when border guards subject automobiles to extremely thorough examination, the number of cars lined up to leave Lithuania via the border with Belarus remains virtually the same, the State Border Guard Service has said.

On Wednesday morning, there were no cars waiting to leave Lithuania to Belarus via Lavoriškės, Medininkai and Raigardas checkpoints, with about 20 automobiles lined up at Šalčininkai checkpoint, Giedrius Misutis, the head of the SBGS Public Relations Division, told BNS.

No truck lines were reported at Lavoriškės and Raigardas checkpoints, while about 12 trucks were awaiting entry to Belarus at Šalčininkai and about 1000 at Medininkai.

Meanwhile, Belarusian border guards maintain that the Lithuanian protest action caused long lines on their side of the border. On Wednesday morning, 60 trucks were lined up on the Belarusian side of Lavoriškės, 70 at Medininkai, 120 at Šalčininkai and 40 at Raigardas.

In Misutis' words, the lines to enter Lithuania are quite usual. According to information provided by the State Border Guard Service, the line at Lavoriškės and Šalčininkai expanded by approximately 20 trucks by Wednesday noon.

"Flows are changing, there is nothing unusual," he said.

Lithuanian officers held a protest action last Friday, staging a picket action outside the Vilnius International Airport on Friday to draw the attention of arriving members of the European Commission (EC).

This way, statutory officers – police officers, fire-and-rescue officers, border officers, penitentiary monitors – aim to persuade the local administration into raising the financing of the law-enforcement sector, improving social benefits for officers and launch reforms of the system.
