Stateless persons born in Lithuania will now be able to get Lithuanian citizenship easier after parliament adopted amendments to the Law on Citizenship and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

Initiated by the Ministry of the Interior, the provisions stipulate that Lithuanian citizenship could be granted to a stateless person who was born in the territory of Lithuania, has legally resided in the country for the last five years, has no citizenship of another country, and meets other criteria.

"In terms of internal law, statelessness is an undesirable phenomenon as stateless persons have fewer rights. By joining the convention, Lithuania would underline respect for existing global standards and human rights," the explanatory note of the amendments says.

Introducing the draft amendments, Elvinas Jankevičius, deputy minister of the interior, said that around 4,000 stateless people live in Lithuania.
