Lithuania re-introduces student military training

Military training for higher school graduates will be resumed the upcoming fall, Lithuania's Ministry of National Defense announced on Wednesday. The selection process will take place from 16 March until 11 May, the ministry said.

"First-year students are invited to take part in the selection process. All in all, there are plans to invite up to 150 students to take part in this voluntarily training. The training will take place in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda," the statement said.

Minister of National Defense Rasa Juknevičienė said the decision to resume military training for students was aimed at strengthening the army reserve. Such training will allow supplying the army with necessary specialists in certain fields.

The whole training process will take over 160 days which will be stretched over the period of three years, meaning that students will undergo training from the second until the fourth year of their studies. Training sessions will be held on weekends, and two-week field training in the army polygons will take place during summer breaks.

Upon completion of the training, students will obtain an additional military profession and the qualification of infantry unit commander. They will also receive reserve lieutenant ranks and will have completed compulsory military service.
