The parliament decided to postpone the first hearing of draft resolutions initiated by the chairs of the Committees on Environmental Protection and Economics and the Energy Commission with 91 votes for, 6 votes against and three abstentions.

Both drafts have been worked out after the consideration of scientists’ findings on shale gas last week.

The chairs of the two committees then proposed to the government to suspend the signing of the contract with Chevron until the adoption of legislation that would govern the exploration and use of shale gas resources.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius has said that the deal with Chevron on shale gas exploration in Western Lithuania could be signed by May after the adoption of the required legislative amendments by the parliament.
