Lithuanian legendary boxer Algirdas Šocikas dies

Lithuanian boxing legend Algirdas Šocikas passed away at 84 in Kaunas, Lithuania's second largest city, on Wednesday following a prolonged disease.

Nicknamed a ring gentleman, he won the European Amateur Boxing Championships in the Heavyweight division twice: at Warsaw 1953 and West Berlin 1955. He also won the Soviet championship six times (1950-1954, and 1956), the Lithuanian championship six times (1947, 1948, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956) and the Baltic championship three times (1948, 1950, 1952).

Šocikas spent 11 years in the ring and had 128 fights winning 118, including 70 knockouts. Socikas was famed for a perfect technique and being a gentleman in the ring. He was named Lithuania's best athlete in 1956.

After quitting his active boxing career, Šocikas became head coach of Lithuania's national boxing team in 1957.
