Lithuanian politician Kazys Bobelis dies at 90

Kazys Bobelis, a well-known Lithuanian politician, long-standing head of the US-based Supreme Committee for the Liberation of Lithuania, and former member of the Lithuanian Seimas, has passed away at the age of 90.

Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Bobelis' death to BNS on Monday.

Bobelis was born in Kaunas in 1923. In 1941, Bobelis participated in Lithuania's uprising against the Bolsheviks.

Bobelis studied medicine at Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania), University of Graz (Austria) and University of Tübingen (Germany). In 1948, he graduated maxima cum laude from Tübingen. In 1949, he moved to the United States and lived in Chicago, working as a surgeon. From 1962 to 1972, he was professor of clinical surgery at Loyola University Chicago. From 1978 to 1991, he was a private practitioner.

While in the United States, Bobelis was an active member of the Lithuanian expatriate community. Between 1962 and 1976 he served on the board of the Lithuanian American Congress. In 1979, he became the head of the Central Committee of the Liberation of Lithuania.

Bobelis returned to Lithuania in 1992. From 1992 to 31 May 2006 he was a member of the Seimas, elected in Marijampolė constituency. In 1997, he ran for president.

From 1996 to 2000, he was the president of the Lithuanian Baseball Association.
