The court said the ruling was based on the fact that Akhremov was punished on merely one occasion during his jail term and was commended 16 times for good work and conduct, could be characterized as showing “good emotional balance” and politeness.
The convict was ordered to register with the parole institution and must be at home between 10 PM and 6 AM, not to leave his permanent residence for periods extending over seven days.
Akhremov has said he would live with his parents in Vilnius after leaving prison, where he has spent 18 years, 5 months, and 20 days. He had 6 years, 6 months and 11 days left to serve.
Akhremov was detained on 21 October 1993 and has been in custody ever since for murdering Lingys, journalist of the daily Respublika, on 12 October 1993.
In November 1994, courts sentenced Vilnius Brigade criminal gang leader Boris Dekanidze and his three assistants Akhremov, Viacheslav Slavicki and Boris Bobichenko.
Dekanidze was put to death in 1995, while Slavicki and Bobichenko have already served their sentences.
Akhremov was initially sentenced to life in prison, his charges were requalified in line with new articles of the Criminal Code in 2004 and he was put in prison for 25 years.
