A man and a four-year-old girl were injured in a holiday camp in Giruliai when a tree fell on their tent. Another man in a car sustained head injuries in another location in the city.

"A family from Lentvaris, eastern Lithuania – a man and a four-year-old girl – were injured after a tree fell on their tent. Both of them sustained head injuries and were taken to hospital," Nijolė Dambrauskienė of Klaipėda ambulance service told BNS.

She says another man, 28, sustained head injuries after a tree fell on his car.

In a separate incident, people were trapped in a car after trees fell on a vehicle but they did not need medical assistance after rescuers pulled them out.

Strong winds and rain tumbled trees, caused floods and property damage in western Lithuania on Monday. Fire and rescue services received 92 calls for help, including 74 reports related to powerful winds, Donatas Gurevičius, spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department, told BNS on Tuesday.

All in all, 53 fires broke out over the last 24 hours, including six caused by lightening.

Winds and rain mostly lashed the western part of the country but fire and rescue services also received calls in eastern areas, including Vilnius, Kaunas, Varėna, Trakai, Alytus.

Around 12,000 people in storm-hit areas were still without power on Tuesday morning.

According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, winds of up to 38 m/s were recorded at the seaside at around 7 PM on Monday and around 48 mm of rain fell just in half an hour in Klaipėda on Monday evening.

12,000 households without power

Around 12,000 households in Lithuania were without electricity on Tuesday morning after the night storm, power distribution company Lesto reported.

“The largest numbers of households were affected in the region of Vilnius, with 4,000 households without electricity, as well as in the regions of Klaipėda and Kaunas, with approximately 3,000 households without electricity in each of these areas,” Ervinas Pareigis of Lesto’s dispatching control center told BNS.

The largest numbers of cut-offs were registered in the districts of Šalčininkai, Kaunas, Gargždai and Kretinga, he said.

Lesto would seek to restore electricity supply to most of the households affected on Tuesday, Pareigis said adding that the company would probably not be able to eliminate all failures during the day.

“Weather conditions are unfavorable and we continue to get new reports about failures. ... it might take several days to eliminate all failures,” Pareigis said.
