A total of 9,819 reports of suspected domestic violence were received in the January-April period, the Police Department said.
Over the first month of this year, 3,489 reports were received, followed by 2,220 over the second month, 1,977 over the third month and 2,133 over the last month.
According to statistics, men are more frequently suspected of violent behavior – 2,776 men, 115 women and six children were listed as suspects over the four months. Meanwhile, victims included 2,777 women, 288 men and 236 children.
The law on protection against domestic violence stipulates that the police must open investigations even in cases when victims refuse to press charges.
The law took effect in mid-December 2011.
