Number of asylum seekers in Lithuania among lowest in EU

The number of asylum seekers in Lithuania was among the lowest in the European Union last year, figures by Eurostat, the statistics office of the European Union, showed on Tuesday.

335 decisions on granting protection to asylum seekers were made in Lithuania, including 25 positive decisions. Five seekers were granted refugee status and 20 were granted subsidiary protection.

15 Afghanis, as well five Belorussian and five Russian citizens were granted asylum in Lithuania in 2011.

The number of asylum seekers in Lithuania was higher only compared to Estonia (75), Latvia (110), Slovakia (225), Slovenia (285), Portugal (120) and Lichtenstein (100).

In 2011, the highest number of asylum seekers was registered in France (76,800), Germany (64,900), the United Kingdom (41,300) Sweden (39,900) and Belgium (30,300). Thousands of people were granted asylum in these countries.

All in al, 365,615 people applied for asylum in the EU last year, including 84,110 positive decisions.
