Some 595,200 children under the age of 18 lived in Lithuania at the beginning of 2012, 100,300 children less than in 2007.
According to statistics, children made 18.6 percent of the population in early 2012.
At the beginning of 2012, the number of boys was 15,500 more than that of girls. The number of boys dropped by 50,800 over the past five years, as compared with the decrease in girls of 49,500.
According to data published by European statistics agency Eurostat, the European Union's (EU) average percentage of children in population was 18.9 percent last year.
Among EU countries, the highest percentage of children lived in Ireland (25.5 pct), France (22.1 pct), and Denmark (21.8 pct), while the lowest ratio was in Germany (16.3 pct), Bulgaria (16.6 pct) and Latvia (16.8 pct). Last year, Lithuania's percentage of children was 18.8 percent, as compared with 18.4 percent in Estonia and 18.7 percent in Poland.
