According to the press release, most women were involved in the training in the summer of 2012 when a single company included 10 young women.
Women in Lithuania did not have the opportunity to do mandatory military service until the enforcement of the new National Conscription Law in the fall of 2011.
"After Lithuania regained independence, we have received a number of requests from young women to be called for the mandatory initial military service, however, our laws did not envisage the opportunity and they received negative answers," said Major Gintaras Valentukevičius, the commander of the military conscription division.
By now, nearly 2,000 Lithuanian citizens have completed the mandatory and basic training.
Basic training lasts 12 weeks and is open to Lithuanian citizens between ages of 18 and 38 with secondary education and no convictions for premeditated offenses. Completion of the training offers additional benefits, namely, grants for employers and compensation of tuition fees.
