The existing punishment system in Lithuania needs reviewing and punishment for certain deeds must be made softer, Lithuania's Prosecutor General Darius Valys has said.

"Lithuania is characterized by the number of people serving real terms. I believe that the punishment policy and even the punishment system definitely need reviewing, and we need to look for alternatives to prison terms. (...) I am not in favor of tightening. On the contrary, we need to look for a punishment softening policy," Valys told the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs while presenting the Prosecutor General's Office's annual report on Wednesday.

The prosecutor general also said the Penal Code is currently under review to identify where real prison terms could be replaced by alternatives, including fines.
