Prosecutor says Labor Party trial an example of how Lithuania's criminal process is amenable to abuse

Saulius Verseckas, prosecutor of the Lithuanian Prosecutor General's Office, says that the Labor Party bookkeeping fraud trial is a unique occurrence in Lithuania's court practice that has revealed shortcomings of the criminal process and opportunities to protract proceedings for years.

The state prosecutor spoke on Thursday in the opening part of his lengthy closing argument in Vilnius court.

"After handing over the case to court in 2008, I could not imagine I would make my final argument only five years later," the prosecutor said.

In his words, the crimes disclosed in the case could constitute a threat to national security and political system.

By Thursday noon, the prosecutor had completed one tenth of his argument. Verseckas was to continue in the afternoon and probably on Friday. In the end of the closing argument, he will specify the punishments prosecutors want for the defendants who are standing trial for bookkeeping fraud.
