Prosecutors ask to revoke MP Vitas Matuzas' legal immunity

Prosecutors of Panevėžys, northern Lithuania, have asked Prosecutor General Darius Valys to appeal to the parliament for revoking of legal immunity for MP Vitas Matuzas of the ruling conservatives.

The information was confirmed by Rūta Dirsienė, head of the Public Relations Division of the Prosecutor General's Office. She said the appeal was received on Tuesday.

In Dirsienė's words, Valys should decide on the request within a week.

Prosecutors have refused to comment on details of the investigation. However, Dirsienė said the request had to do with a probe by the Special Investigation Service into the possible lack of transparency in public procurement at Panevėžio Energija (Panevėžys Energy) utility.

In the case, suspicions of abuse of powers have been brought against Matuzas' wife Danutė Matuzienė.

Last December, Matuzienė was detained for 48 hours and later released on a bail of 40,000 litas (EUR 11,600). She was put under house arrest, which was later replaced with a written pledge not to leave her residence.

Matuzas has indicated in his declaration of public and private interests that Matuzienė was employed in companies Distenas, Platina Group and Lithuanian Agriculture Advisory Service.

The MP has earlier expressed confidence in his wife's innocence.
