Seimas’ committees propose to suspend shale gas exploration in Western Lithuania for now

Parliamentary Committees on Environmental Protection and Economics have proposed to put on hold the tender for licenses to explore for shale gas in Western Lithuania until the adoption of legislation that will govern the exploration and use of these natural resources.

The panels adopted this decision after hearing the scientists’ findings at a joint meeting on Wednesday.

The committees will submit their conclusions to the government which will decide whether or not to give the green light for the US energy giant Chevron, which participated in the shale gas exploration tender, to look for shale gas in the western part of Lithuania.
