"From what we see now, 30-33 degrees are reported in many districts now. An automatic thermometer registered 34.2 degrees in Tauragė district. The 34.2 degrees mark today as the hottest day this summer," Margarita Kirkliauskaitė of the Hydrometeorological Service told BNS on Thursday afternoon.
In her words, Thursday's temperature will probably set new August 8 heat records in most districts.
The hot spell started in Lithuania on Tuesday. Weather services said Friday may still bring up to 30 degrees, especially to southeastern districts, while the weekend will be more refreshing.
Such hot temperatures were last recorded in Lithuania in the end of June – 33.6 degrees was reported in the port city of Klaipėda on June 26.
In Kirkliauskaitė's words, 30 degrees may theoretically be reached before mid-September, however, no heat wave is expected in the coming weeks.
