The first march is being organized by Kaunas Unit of the Lithuanian Nationalist Youth Union and will take place from 1 p.m. till 3 p.m. Around 1,000 people should take part in the march.
The second march, called "For Solidarity and Diversity in Lithuania" and organized by Kaunas unit of the Tolerant Youth Association, was scheduled to take place from 4 p.m. till 6 p.m. and would have consisted of around 100 people.
Both marches were planned on similar routes but separate permits were issued for them, Kaunas City Municipality told BNS on Monday.
Lithuanian Nationalist Youth Union is notorious for its previous Independence Day's marches with slogans "Lithuania for Lithuanians."
The Tolerant Youth Association is a national youth organization advocating for human rights, including LGBTQ.
As an explanation for its decision to cancel one of the marches, Kaunas municipality cited security concerns. The police would not be able to deal with the mass event, according to Deputy Director of Kaunas Municipal Administration Vygantas Molis.
Two separate organizations also plan marches in Vilnius on March 11.
Lithuanian will mark the 94 th anniversary of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania on Thursday.
