US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton informed of plans to provide funds to the European Humanities University in a letter to Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis.
"The US secretary of state said in the letter that the country had made the commitment to allocate USD 1 million over three years to the EHU," the ministry said in a statement.
Clinton said she believed that US involvement would encourage other donors to contribute to EHU's further progress.
The US has provided USD 3.5 million to the Vilnius-based university since 2001.
Clinton also highlighted US cooperation with the university in implementing programs promoting democracy in Belarus.
The EHU was founded in Belarus in 1992 but was moved to the Lithuanian capital in 2005 due to pressure from the Belorussian authorities. Currently, it has 1,800 students, mainly Belarusian citizens.
