Vilnius police investigate Stalin portrait incident

Vilnius police are carrying out an investigation into an incident on May 9 when Valerij Ivanov, former leader of post-Soviet organization Yedinstvo, displayed a portrait of Stalin at Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius.

Public display of Soviet symbols is prohibited by law in Lithuania.

The incident was registered on May 10. Ivanov is facing a fine and confiscation of the portrait, according to Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat.

In Lithuania, distribution, use at a meeting or any other public gathering or demonstration of images of the Soviet Communist Party leaders carries a fine of 500-1,000 litas (EUR 145-290) with the confiscation of the image.

According to media reports, Ivanov held two images of Stalin and a Soviet marshal at Antakalnis Cemetery where the day of victory against Fascism was marked.
