Žalgiris Kaunas fined for team fans attacking Real Madrid's Rudy Fernandez

The Euroleague's independent disciplinary judge has slapped Žalgiris Kaunas with a fine of EUR 25,000 for the attack by the team's fans, twin brothers Nauris and Normunds Macius, against a player of Real Madrid, Rudy Fernandez, after a Euroleague Top 16 match on March 7 in Kaunas.

Žalgiris Kaunas was ordered to make arrangements for the Macius brothers "not to be allowed to enter Žalgirio arena anymore."

In addition to the independent judge's decision, Euroleague Basketball has decided to ban for life the access or participation of the brothers in any event directly organized by the company, including Turkish Airlines Euroleague and Eurocup games.

The two drunk basketball fans were arrested for attacking Fernandez after an Euroleague match with Žalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania.

Nauris Macius, one of the twin brothers who were recently granted Lithuanian citizenship after giving up their Latvian passports, hit Fernandez on the head at Žalgirio Arena near the exit to the parking lot.

After another Spanish man attempted to stop Macius, his brother also joined the clash.

Both suspects "actively resisted arrest but were detained and taken to custody," a police statement said.

Nauris Macius' alcohol level was 2.62 per mille, his brother Normunds' blood contained 2.22 per mille alcohol.

The police started a pre-trial investigation over violation of public order, which is punishable by public works, a fine or up to two years in prison.

During the match in Kaunas, Fernandez received a hostile reception from local fans over several incidents reported during the previous game between Žalgiris Kaunas and Real Madrid where he provoked Kaunas players and was penalized by Euroleague.
