Matas Maldeikis. Is Nausėda exceeding his authority by representing Lithuania at the European Council?

Like the rest of the world, Lithuania is facing unprecedented virus-induced and medical management-related crises. The former government had to step down after its inability to handle these crises and its attempts at giving advice to the new minister of healthcare seem laughable at best.

However, one can hardly smile at the goals being set by the President Gitanas Nausėda. Reaching herd immunity in Lithuania by Statehood Day, which is celebrated on July 6, does not resemble a presidential strategy to help the country fight the crisis. Instead it seems to be a vindictive expectation of a failure to be had by the current government led by Ingrida Šimonytė and, especially, the new minister of health.
