After minister's resignation, Parliament Speaker hopes for following actions regarding FCIS

Following the decision by the Minister of Interior Affairs, Raimundas Palaitis, to resign, Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutienė said she hoped the Liberal and Center Union would fulfill coalition partners' other requests regarding the Financial Crime Investigation Service.

"The speaker hopes the Liberal and Center Union will make other steps necessary in the story of reinstatement of the FCIS officers and in the relations of coalition partners," the speaker said in a statement on Monday.

She also welcomed the liberal centrists' "decision to finally make a step towards justice."

"Finally former Minister Raimundas Palaits acknowledged he had for a long time acted disgracefully and wrongly by refusing to resign and held the whole Lithuania hostage," Degutienė said.

In the speaker's opinion, it's good that Palaitis and the liberal centrists finally acknowledged their mistakes.

"I regret the fact that it took so long and in violation of constitutional principles, including the principle that the minister is directly accountable to the prime minister and not any other person, and that a government is a collegial institution," Degutienė said.

Palatis earlier rejected Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius' proposal to step down but on Monday finally announced his resignation following a meeting with President Dalia Grybauskaitė.
