Almost 2.5 percent cast early vote in Lithuania's general elections

Some 62,931 people, or 2.45 percent of all voters, have cast their votes over two days of early voting in the Seimas elections and a referendum on nuclear power plant.

Twice as many people cast early vote in this year's elections as compared to the previous ones in 2008, with only 35,695 people, or 1.33 percent of all voters.

People were able to vote early at municipalities on Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile voting by mail, which started on Wednesday, still continues and people will also be able to cast their votes at home on Friday and Saturday.

Early vote is meant for people who will not be able to vote at their polling districts on Sunday. All in all, there were 49,790 such people during this election. 13,133 people, who are in hospitals, correctional facilities, or are serving in the army, have voted by mail. Several people have alreadu voted at home.

Another 199 votes have been received from Lithuanian troops currently on a mission in Afghanistan.

The Seimas elections and a referendum on the construction of Visaginas nuclear power plant will take place on Sunday.
