Angela Merkel says Germany backs Lithuania's 2015 euro goal if it meets criteria

Germany supports Lithuania's aspirations to join the eurozone in 2015, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said after meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble in Germany. The chancellor has said that Germany will back Lithuania's euro aspirations if it meets the necessary criteria.

"Both meetings went very well. We had a rather open, concrete discussion. I liked it very much. We spoke about economic development and employment issues, particularly about solving youth unemployment problems. Then we had a lengthy conversation about energy, the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, and the education system. We received support regarding joining the eurozone in 2015," Butkevičius told BNS by telephone.

"We spoke that Germany will back Lithuania if it meets the requirements for joining the eurozone. The criteria must be met, but then there will always be German support," Merkel said at a joint news conference with Butkevičius in Berlin.

"Second, we spoke that Germany supports Lithuania on its road to membership of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Not everything goes smoothly, but you do have Germany's backing," she said.

Butkevičius said that they also discussed the Lithuanian EU presidency's priorities.
