Baltic farmers to protest in Brussels over EU aid

Around 100 farmers from the three Baltic countries, including some 60 from Lithuania, will protest in Brussels during the EU summit on Thursday to press their demands for higher direct payments, the president of the Lithuanian Chamber of Agriculture said.

Andriejus Stancikas said that the Lithuanian delegation on Wednesday will participate in a meeting of the presidium of the EU farmers and cooperatives' organization COPA.

"COPA is one of the most influential organizations. We will state out position regarding the size of EU payments during the meeting. Last year, COPA stated its position that attention needed to be paid to the problems of payments to the Baltic states. Thus, this will be some additional support for us," he said.

The delegation of Lithuanian farmers also plans to meet with Lithuanian EU commissioner, Algirdas Šemeta.

As part of their protest campaign last November, Baltic farmers drove an old Soviet-era tractor from Tallinn to Brussels to draw attention to their problems.

Direct payments to Lithuanian farmers are planned to be increased to 65 percent of the EU average in the next financial perspective period, from the current 50 percent. However, Baltic farmers want their payments to at least match the EU average.
