Early general election proposed to be held in July

Lithuania's Parliamentary Speaker Irena Degutienė has suggested holding the proposed early general elections in July, after all strategic decisions on energy projects are made.

"We are good-willed and determined to settle all strategic issues and energy matters in May and June, let's end the spring session and finish this term to hold early elections in July," she said in an interview to Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė's move to leave Interior Minister Raimundas Palaitis in his post has stepped up “political tensions” at the parliament, which makes it difficult to organize the parliament's work, Degutienė said.

In her words, politicians could call a "moratorium on all interpellations and ad hoc commissions" before deciding on premature elections.

Degutienė noted that her proposal was objected by some members of the ruling Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, saying it is unclear whether the bid would secure the backing of 85 of Lithuania's 141 parliamentarians, as required by the law.

The idea of premature elections drew support of opposition political groups of Social Democrats, Labor Party and Order and Justice Party on Tuesday.

During the spring session, parliamentarians will be proposed to address bills that are important for development of Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant and liquefied natural gas terminal.

The nearest regular general election is scheduled for October.
