"The EU commissioner reaffirmed the Commission's support for the project, which is a key part of the European Commission's plan for full integration of the Baltic states into the internal European energy market," Visagino Atominė Elektrinė (Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant, or VAE), the state-owned company in charge of the project, said in a press release.
Oettinger on Thursday met with the top executives of the regional partners in the project - VAE, Latvia's Latvenergo, and Estonia's Eesti Energia - and the vice-president of Japan's Hitachi, the strategic investor and technology provider, it said.
The commissioner welcomed the investors' efforts to form a joint project company and further develop the project. He noted that a significant progress had already been achieved in the project, according to the press release.
