“The representatives of both Lithuania and Gazprom set out their positions on the issues relevant for both parties during the meeting. I expressed our concerns about the prices applied to Lithuania’s gas consumers, which do not reflect the actual situation in the gas market. I told Mr. Medvedev that our goal is to ensure a stable and sustainable gas supply system that would guarantee a competitive price of gas for Lithuania,” a press release from the Energy Minister quoted Neverovič as saying.
The process of negotiations would not be simple or fast since there had been no actual dialogue or talks with Gazprom for a long time, the minister said adding that this would require both a lot of efforts from Gazprom and close cooperation with the European Commission (EC).
According to the ministry, this was the first meeting between the representatives of Lithuania and Gazprom following the appointment by Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius of a negotiating team for talks with Russia’s gas giant. The negotiating team actually met with Gazprom’s representatives last week. However, the Energy Ministry then said that it was a purely consultative meeting held to discuss organizational issues.
