Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said he would "keep fingers crossed" for the general elections to be successful for the Lithuanian conservative leader.

"To my understanding, he was not only a good leader for Lithuania, but he was a good leader for the whole region. It was Andrius who decided to create deeper cooperation between our three countries after Lehman Brothers," Ansip said referring to the US bank's collapse in 2008.

"Of course, it's up to Lithuanians to elect the new government, new prime minister, but because I know Andrius, I will keep fingers crossed for Andrius," the Estonian prime minister said.

According to Ansip, they have excellent personal and family relations that help build trust. The Estonian prime minister said closer cooperation helped the Baltic states to emerge from the crisis southern Europe is facing now.

"We can fully trust each other. This trust and mutual cooperation, understanding were really important during the crisis. Now, growth rates in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are the highest in the European Union," Ansip said.

"We are able to understand what they are talking about in Europe when they are talking about the credit crisis. But we are far away from this situation already. Maybe it's difficult to understand for ordinary people, but the Baltic states nowadays are like lucky islands in Europe," the Estonian premier said.

Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis also said he had „excellent cooperation“ with Prime Minister Kubilius and also praised his work.

The Seimas elections are scheduled for 14 October.
